UMCOR Mission Opportunities: You may write a check to Fishkill UMC, and note the Advance and number in the corner. In Haiti, UMCOR is working through its office in Cap Haitien and through partner, Action by Churches Together, to respond to those most affected by Hurricanes Fay, Hanna, Gustav and Ike, including children. UMCOR is bringing emergency relief to 500 orphaned or hurricane-affected children in Cabaret, north of Port-au-Prince, where recent hurricanes caused massive floods and destroyed communities. UMCOR Haiti is working with the Mayor's office in Cabaret, the office of Civil Action and the Methodist staff to distribute food packages, hygiene kits and small toys which will help alleviate trauma experienced by the children. Based on Haiti's ongoing needs assessments, UMCOR Haiti will provide families and displaced individuals with a variety of assistance packages such as long-term access to potable water, cash for work activities to help clean up the affected areas, school kits for school age children, cook stoves and building materials to help families rebuild. Haiti Emergency, UMCOR Advance #418325 Hurricane Ike made its devastating landfall in Galveston, Tex., and along the Gulf Coast on Sept. 12, forcing many people into temporary shelters and leaving about 1.5 million people without power. Hurricane Ike caused severe damage to homes, businesses and communities, making it the largest recovery effort in the state's history. Sam Dixon, UMCOR's top executive, said, "While we do not know the full extent of the people's needs in Texas, UMCOR will work quickly to understand and respond and begin the process to help people rebuild their lives." UMCOR is in contact with affected annual conferences and is making assessments for long-term recovery work. UMCOR's domestic disaster response staff has been deployed to assist in the recovery. Since the conflict began in Georgia, UMCOR has been working to deliver much-needed supplies to help those most in need. To date, UMCOR has assisted more than 50,000 internally displaced people with hygiene kits, food packages and bedding kits. Medical supplies were distributed to more than 15,000 displaced people as part of two US government-sponsored airlifts of which UMCOR coordinated the medical supply portion. An UMCOR Sager Brown shipment is en route to Georgia, and it is expected to arrive in mid-September pending security issues. You can be part of the work and the humanitarian response to the conflict by giving to: Survivor is a happy and healthy four-year boy. But when he arrived at a Hope for the Nations feeding center in Ganta, Liberia, he was far from healthy. Survivor was deathly ill and undernourished. Thankfully, a Moringa-rich diet introduced through UMCOR's Sustainable Agriculture & Development Program (SA&D) helped saved Survivor's life. The growing and cultivation of Moringa is a special focus of UMCOR's SA&D program. Moringa leaves contain the daily essential nutrients such as vitamins A, C, iron, calcium, potassium, and protein —helping to bring better health to Africa's ailing population. In addition, farmers looking to make additional income can turn to Moringa. It is a low cost investment that produces excellent yields. To contribute to programs like these where farmers are growing healthy, lifesaving crops that are helping the malnourished get healthier, give to: Staff and volunteers at UMCOR Sager Brown, the relief supply warehouse in Baldwin, La., have been busy preparing and shipping relief supplies in response to recent hurricanes. Trailers and truckloads of flood buckets, health kits and generators were sent to several locations in Texas and Louisiana for distribution to families affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. A total of 9,882 flood buckets have been sent out from Sager Brown Depot, MERCI Mission Center, NC and Midwest Mission Distribution Center, Ill. Nearly 3,000 health kits were sent to five locations in Louisiana and 4,000 flood buckets were sent to eight other locations. Incoming shipments of relief supplies will go to the Texas Annual Conference to support their needs. The Midwest Distribution Warehouse also delivered 1,000 flood buckets to assist Northern Indiana where UMCOR has responded with an emergency grant to help in recovery, as well as anticipates providing case management training. There is an urgency to replenish flood bucket supplies at UMCOR Sager Brown and other warehouse locations. |
