A Word From the Pastor (September 2008)

Dear Friends in Christ,

The day is almost here.  As I write this, I am in the middle of packing up stuff for the big trip to Ohio.  In a week I will give my son a big hug and kiss and leave him among strangers in a strange land at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.  It’s a challenge to imagine all the things he may need while he’s away from us.  Clothes are being washed and packed.  School supplies are in bags by the front door.  Nathaniel has bought a new computer and a cell phone.  The school told us to order extra-long sheets for his dorm bed, and we dutifully obeyed.  We’ve set up a bank account with a bank that has a branch just a few blocks from the school.  We’ve gathered all kinds of paperwork that might be relevant or helpful in the days ahead.  A list of personal items and dorm room accessories is nestled in my wallet.  These things will be purchased when we get to Ohio.  It certainly takes a lot of organizing to transplant a life.  There are so may eventualities to be considered.  We certainly hope Nathaniel will have everything he needs.

Of course, even in the midst of this chaotic process, I am aware that most of what Nathaniel needs is already being provided.  At school, regular meals, warm shelter, and a quality education are guaranteed, as long as our bill is paid.  He has the basic necessities for which others in our world yearn and struggle.  He also takes with him a number of intangible treasures that cannot be packed or bundled or shipped.  He has the gifts and talents that God has given him.  He possesses the determination of a young man who has worked hard to overcome his disabilities.  He has a sound work ethic and high expectations of himself.  Hopefully, he carries with him the values that Porter and I have labored to instill in him.  Certainly he takes with him the assurance of his family’s love.

In addition, he has the gift of faith.  He knows the importance of worship and prayer.  He has the words of scripture and the example of Christ to guide him.  He knows that wherever he goes the church can be a source of help and hope and a place of welcome.  He knows that whatever happens, God is only a prayer away.  God is with him, God cares for him, God loves him and will support him.  I’m grateful for these intangibles that Nathaniel may not recognize or articulate, but that I know will help him along life’s journey.

As fall arrives, and new challenges arise, may we all take time to recognize the intangibles that guide us and sustain us and nurture us along our journey.  Whether we’re going off to college or staying close to home, may we all be clear about what it is we really need in life, and may we trust in God’s abundant provision.  May God bless you, whatever the fall may hold for you and wherever your life journey may lead.
.

In Christ’s Love,
Rev. Peggy Ann Sauerhoff
