A Word From the Pastor (September 2006)

Dear Friends in Christ,

Now begins a season of opportunity. Young people returning to school have the opportunity to learn and grow in new and unpredictable ways. From academics, to sports, to music and the arts, to community service, this is a time of new beginnings, of stretching and exploring, of new adventures. Only time will tell what the outcome of this season of hope and discovery will be.

This is a season of opportunity and adventure within the church as well. Consider some of our members and friends. D. Resling is beginning a season of discovery as she spreads her wings and glides forth from Fishkill U.M.C. Her supervised ministry, serving at Cornwall U.M. Church, will give her a great opportunity to experience the mission of the church from a new perspective, to see Christ’s body at work in new ways and to gain fresh insight into her role within that body.
On September 10, K. and N. Vogel will bring their son, Lucas, to be baptized in Christ’s holy church. N. and K. will have the opportunity to explore afresh their role as Christian parents as little Lucas embarks on a lifelong journey as a member of the family of God.

With the start of Sunday School, on September 10 our third graders will each receive the gift of a Bible. With this gift comes the opportunity to explore the scriptures and allow God’s word to penetrate the spirit. A journey of discovery opens up whenever we take time to delve into the sacred word of God.

October will bring two opportunities for adult study that can foster a new beginning in the walk of faith. The first study, “What Does It Mean to Be a United Methodist?,” is for new and seasoned participants in the life of Fishkill U.M.C. This course will explore who we are as United Methodists and help us claim our history, doctrine, and mission as children of the Wesleyan tradition. This five-week course will run on Wednesday evenings and Friday mornings (pick the time that works for you) and is appropriate for newcomers to the church (who may be considering church membership) and those who want a refresher on who we are as United Methodists.

The second course, “Beginnings: An Introduction to Christian Faith,” will explore the most basic questions regarding what it means to be a Christian. Through video, reflection, and discussion we will consider such questions as “So, Is This All There Is?,” “Who Is Jesus, and Why Should I Care?,” “If I Don’t Feel Lost, Why Do I Need to Be Found?” This twelve-week course is designed for those seeking deeper meaning in life who wish to explore what Christianity is all about. The course is also appropriate for more seasoned Christians who wish to review the basics and be re-energized in their commitment to Christ. The course will be offered on Friday evenings beginning in October.

As the fall approaches, we embark on a season of opportunity and discovery. I invite you to embrace the adventure as we explore and grow in our Christian life together.

Yours in Christ,
Peggy Ann Sauerhoff
